After the 18 mile marker, a plain sign indicates the Wailua Valley State Wayside Park on the mauka (inland) side. Climb up the stairs and above the brush you have a view of the town of Wailua on the coastal side and on the other side you see a large valley that goes all the way to the Ko'olau Gap at the top of the Haleakala mountain. The view is kind of obstructed due to the almost daily gathering of clouds that move up this side of Haleakala. To see the Ko'olau Gap from near the top of Haleakala, click here to see the photo from the Haleakala photo set.
